Women’s health

Women are wonderfully complex and beautiful creatures. As many hormonal changes occur through life’s milestones; puberty, reproduction, pregnancy, birth, and menopause, they also experience monthly hormonal fluctuations through the reproductive years. Nutritional, herbal and lifestyle strategies can help ease the journey through the major hormonal changes in our lives.

The Complexity of Female Hormones

From puberty, to periods, to menopause – hormones can pose a challenge for many women throughout their lives. You may be all too familiar with symptoms such as painful, heavy or irregular periods, premenstrual mood swings and bloating, hot flushes…and the list goes on. Female hormonal conditions are complex and frequently frustrating for women. While hormonal fluctuations have traditionally been blamed, there is more to this story – many other factors also affect the subtle balance required for optimal hormonal harmony.

Fertility and preconception care

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12months of unprotected intercourse. In Australia 1 in 6 couples are unable to conceive naturally. With an increase in the amount turning to IVF, IVF is successful in 35% of couples.

Wholistic Naturopath treatment that we have used in the clinic has a positive outcome on fertility. Within 3-6 months of treatment, there is a significant increase in couple’s success rate of naturally conceiving and having a healthy pregnancy and baby.

We achieve optimal results by using holistic diet changes, lifestyle advice and Naturopathy Herbal and Nutritional treatment that couple’s years of traditional knowledge and the most up to date scientific research. With Naturopath treatment you will notice a boost to natural health, wellbeing, and fertility. Naturopathy can assist with the major causes of infertility in both men and women.

Diet, Lifestyle and Preconception Care

It’s been shown that the future health of a child begins at conception. Lifestyle factors impact significantly on fertility and a child’s health potential. These include the effects of age, illness, medication, toxins, and drugs (pharmaceutical/recreational) poor nutrition and weight problems. By addressing the diet and overall health you are ensuring your body is at its optimal for a healthy pregnancy and child. Naturopathy looks at all aspects of health- mind body and soul. We look at the diet, addresses nutritional deficiencies or excess, ensure healthy weight, energy, and a balanced lifestyle.

FEMALE INFERTILITY

Factors that affect female fertility include hormonal imbalance, structural impediments, obesity, nutritional status, infection & inflammation, stress & lifestyle factors, digestion & liver function, drugs, libido, age, cervical mucus and mistiming intercourse.

Ovulation disorders (irregular or no ovulation) from PCOS accounts for 75% of infertility. PCOS is associated with hormonal imbalance, blood sugar regulation issues, and difficulty in conceiving. Endometriosis is found in up to 40% of women who present with infertility. Fibroids, benign lumps of tissue growing on the uterus can also contribute to infertility.

Maternal obesity is associated with reduced fertility and an increased risk of gestational and fetal risks. All these are considered with treatment. If you are in the initial stages of pregnancy planning and unsure what is going on Lindsay can refer you for specific testing to get an understanding of your underlying issues.

MALE INFERTILITY

Evaluation of infertile couples has revealed that male factor infertility accounts for 68% of cases. Male infertility is the underlying reason for 40% of couples to use IVF. Factors that affect male fertility include hormonal imbalance, structural impediments, obesity, nutritional status, infection & inflammation, stress & lifestyle factors, digestion & liver function, erectile dysfunction, sperm quality, drugs, libido, age and mistiming intercourse.

In Australia, it is estimated that 1 in 20 men have fertility problem with dwindling numbers of sperm. It takes 80 days for a full spermatogenesis cycle. Because the sperm development takes over 2 month’s illness, toxicity, trauma, poor nutrition that was present during this cycle may affect the mature sperm, regardless of a man’s health at the time of examination.

AN INTEGRATED APPROACH

With both male and female fertility, we look at treating both partners and in all aspects of health. Sometimes with fertility, it can be a combination of male & female “multiple causes” or unexplained fertility with no known medical explanation, this doesn’t necessarily mean there will be no chance of pregnancy, by improving overall health in the male and female you have an increased chance of conception.

Naturopathy treat’s the individual person and addresses all aspects of mental emotional and physical wellbeing. No two people are the same and neither is treatment. During your consult we go over your health in-depth; we consider all aspects of your health, diet, lifestyle, and well-being.

We treat your concerns and focus on improving your fertility. If it’s irregular periods, ovulation concerns and weight management we prioritize these, but we also treat and address the other areas of health. If you have high-stress levels, suffering insomnia or digestive complaints we also incorporate these into your treatment plan. Remembering it is all about balance and by improving your overall health we improve your chances of a natural pregnancy.

Riding the Hormonal Roller Coaster?

Do you feel you have no control over the ups and downs of hormonal change you ride through each month? Your symptoms may be related to one of these conditions:

  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): includes symptoms of breast tenderness, migraines and mood changes prior to your period. PMS may be linked to lowered progesterone levels and often made worse by stress.
  • Endometriosis and fibroids: women with these conditions often experience heavy, painful periods, pain throughout the month, bloating, and sometimes weight gain.
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS): missing periods, facial hair growth, sugar cravings, weight gain and difficulty conceiving are commonly experienced, due to higher than normal testosterone and lower progesterone levels.
  • Menopause: many women suffer from hot flushes, night sweats, and anxiety, as their periods come to a stop.

Musicians Distort the Melody

While different conditions are influenced by subtle changes in hormone levels, there are many other factors that also play a role. Likened to musicians in the orchestra playing out of tune, some of these come from your body – such as inflammation (e.g. from joint pain or digestive imbalance), being overweight, and feeling stressed. The environment you live in can also play havoc with hormones. Toxins are virtually unavoidable and many, such as bisphenyl-A or ‘BPA’ (found in plastics, the lining of tins, and even on shopping dockets) have hormone-like effects and may negatively affect your hormonal balance.

  • I’m preempting the end of winter and thinking how else you can stay healthy, stay cool and stay loaded with vegetables 🥒🥝🥦🍐
⠀⠀
If you’re working on adding greens to your diet I’ve found that smoothies and smoothie popsicles like this one are GREAT for starting out. Many wouldn’t touch a plateful of spinach but will happily enjoy it when it’s used to color a lime popsicle. Everyone expects a lime popsicle to be green, right? ⠀⠀
Ingredients:
⠀⠀
1 1/2 cups pineapple (fresh or frozen)
1/2 banana
3/4 cup coconut milk
1/2-1 cup spinach
Zest and juice of 1 lime
⠀⠀
Directions:
⠀⠀
Puree all ingredients in a blender until completely smooth. Pour into your favorite popsicle mold and freeze 3-4 hours, or until completely solid. Makes 5-6 popsicles. .

  • Do you ever have an eye opening moment, when you realize your harshest critic... is you?! I saw a TCM practitioner today to invest in my health 🙌🏾
Permission to relax. Permission to rest when tired. To eat what my body and soul asks.
I left feeling so good! Aware of the unnecessary pressure I put on myself, how at times I create my own stress.
I’ve had a big horrible 12 months and it’s ok and very needed, to take time out to heal.
What do you need to let go of?
Maybe tomorrow you wake up exhausted, can the gym wait?
It’s a big week, do you need back to back meetings or crazy deadlines?
Do you not have the energy for a full face of make up and a night out, would laying in the sun with your bestie be enough?
⠀⠀
It’s not about making excuses and being lazy. It’s listening to your body, slowing down when you need and resting when tired. .

  • Do you juice or blend? I’m a more a blend kinda gal. ⠀⠀
I rather this, as it keeps the fibrous parts/fiber in.
With naturally occurring fruits it’s good to balance out the blood sugar with fiber. I find this keeps my body happier than a juice. I also add cinnamon and hemp oil as well. ⠀⠀
What are you sneaky smoothie additions? Macca powder? Açaí? Spirilina? Almond meal? Matcha?
