Insomnia Treatment

A good nights sleep, helps us feel energised for the day, revitalised, balanced and strong. With a constant lack of sleep, anxiety and depression can worsen and it can be detrimental to our overall health. Thankfully, there are numerous natural treatments, herbal medicine, and nutritional that can help alleviate insomnia.

INSOMNIA

We all have had stages where we have had trouble sleeping or waking throughout the night. Insomnia is not a disorder it is a symptom and is an extremely common complaint. Insomnia is defined as difficulty either initiating or maintaining sleep. It is a term that is used to indicate all stages and types of sleep loss. Insomnia can be divided into two categories:

  1. Sleep onset insomnia-difficulty falling asleep
  2. Maintenance insomnia-frequent or early awakening

Insomnia can be acute (short-term) or chronic (ongoing). Acute insomnia is common and often is brought on by situations such as stress at work, family pressures, or a traumatic event. Acute insomnia lasts for days or weeks.

Chronic insomnia lasts for a month or longer. Most cases of chronic insomnia are secondary, which means they are the symptom or side effect of some other problem. Certain medical conditions, medicines, sleep disorders, and substances can cause secondary insomnia.

In contrast, primary insomnia isn’t due to medical problems, medicines, or other substances. It is its own distinct disorder, and its cause isn’t well understood. Many life changes can trigger primary insomnia, including long-lasting stress and emotional upset.

Insomnia can cause daytime sleepiness and a lack of energy. It also can make you feel anxious, depressed, or irritable. You may have trouble focusing on tasks, paying attention, learning, and remembering.

Natural treatment for insomnia

When insomnia has been ongoing it is helpful to see a naturopath and discuss effective natural treatment for insomnia. Insomnia can be a sign of hormonal changes, neurotransmitter abnormality, food allergies/intolerances or lifestyle factors.

  • Growing a smaller version of yourself takes a lot of work. The third trimester is a time of rapid growth and brain development, so the protein requirement for the baby via the mother is increased.

The average female has a daily protein requirement of 0.8 gram per kilogram. If you become pregnant, your protein requirement will begin to increase and by the third trimester, you will require 1.1 grams per kilogram. 70kg = 77kg
