Passionflower -The calming herb

Legend has it that the herb passionflower received its name because the corona resembles the crown of thorns worn by Christ during the crucifixion. The latter association led the missionaries to name the flowers “Passion Flowers.”

Passionflower is ruled by Venus and used mystically to bring peace to problems and troubles in the home as well as carried to attract friends and popularity.

Where is it from?

Originating from the eastern and southern United States. Herbalists use the aerial parts medicinally.

Why is it so wonderful?

The reason that this is one of my favourite herbs is how beautifully calming it can be! Living in Sydney things can often feel, go, go, go with a tendency for people to burn the candle at both ends, feel anxious, overwhelmed and tense. The main actions of Passionflower; sedative, anxiolytic (reduce anxiety) and anodyne (reduce pain), so its suites these situations perfectly.

What are the health benefits?

There are a few. Passionflower has a beautiful calming effect that can relieve nervous tension and restlessness. In higher does its wonderful for insomnia.

When would you use it?

  • Restlessness
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Nervous gastrointestinal disorders

One of the best things is Passionflower can be used for all the above condition safely in children.

When will it start to work?

When used for stress, anxiety, it may take up to 3-4 weeks before significant effects are seen.

Any issues with medications or pregnancy?

No adverse effects. It is recommended not to be used in pregnancy as in a study on rats, as it caused uterine contractions. Best avoided.
